Why start applying to private schools from JK or K?
In Greater Vancouver, private schools often open new classes at the Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten levels, which means more available spots and a higher chance of admission. This stage is considered the “opportune period” for applications.
What is the youngest age a child can apply, and how far in advance should we prepare?
Most private schools in Greater Vancouver accept children as young as 4 years old (JK level). Parents must typically submit applications a year before entry, when the child is 3 years old. We recommend starting preparations at least 12 to 14 months in advance.
Do JK and K applicants have to take an entrance assessment? What will be tested?
Yes. Most private schools require JK and K applicants to take an entrance assessment. In a number of cases, those applicants who pass can proceed to the interview stage. The test generally evaluates language development, number sense, logical thinking, emotional regulation, and social communication skills.
For JK and K private school applications, what documents do parents need to prepare?
In addition to basic family information and identification documents, parents must write an application statement and provide recommendation letters or have recommendation forms completed.
Who should I ask to write a recommendation letter for my child?
The most important factor in choosing a recommender is that they know your family and child well. For example, your child’s current daycare or preschool teacher would be an ideal choice.
