Answers to Parents’ Most Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Book Consultation
  • Why start applying to private schools from JK & K?

Most private schools in British Columbia begin enrollment at the JK and K grades, which means more available spots and a higher chance of admission. This stage is often considered an opportune window for applications.

  • What is the youngest age my child can apply, and how far in advance should we prepare?

Most private schools in BC accept students starting at age 4 (Junior Kindergarten). Applications are typically submitted a year in advance when your child is 3 years old. We recommend beginning your preparation at least 12 to 14 months before the intended application date.

  • Do Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten applicants need to take an entrance assessment? What is tested?

Yes. Many schools require JK and K applicants to pass an entrance assessment before moving on to the interview stage. These assessments evaluate a child’s language development, number sense, logical reasoning, emotional regulation, and social communication skills.

  • What application materials do parents need to prepare for JK and K?

In addition to basic family and identification documents, parents will need to write parent statements and submit recommendation letters or completed reference forms.

  • Who should I ask to write a recommendation letter for my child?

The most effective recommender is someone who knows your child and family well such as your child’s current daycare or preschool teacher.
